[Case Study] Slurry Concentration Experiment Using Automatic Mortar and Pestle

Concentrate while grinding with the Ishikawa-style automatic mortar and pestle. Concentration is possible even with a small amount or slurry!

Generally, when concentrating slurry, decanter centrifuges, thickeners (concentration tanks), and evaporative concentrators are used. However, decanter centrifuges are expensive equipment and take up space. Additionally, due to high operating costs, one must be cautious when considering their introduction. Thickeners may require a long time for concentration depending on the particle size and concentration of the slurry. They are also not suitable for small-scale concentration. To address these challenges, this time we will conduct experimental verification of a concentration method using the Ishikawa-type stirring and grinding machine (automatic mortar) in a small and straightforward manner. Specifically, we will apply air intake and exhaust ports to the film double insulation cover of the automatic mortar, allowing air to be drawn in and expelled, and heat the slurry to about 60°C to verify whether small amounts of slurry can be easily concentrated. In conclusion, it was found that using the automatic mortar D18SEB, with air intake and exhaust ports applied to the film double insulation cover and heating the slurry to about 60°C, small amounts of slurry can be easily concentrated. This could also serve as proof of its potential use as a "slurry-specific evaporator."
